Arrest made minutes after slaying
Tuesday, November 16, 2004 - PACOIMA -- A suspected gang member was being held
Tuesday in lieu of $1 million bail in the slaying of a 33-year-old Northridge man
near Hansen Dam Park, officials said.
Calvin Edwards was fatally shot about 6 p.m. Monday as he drove on De Haven
Avenue near Terra Bella Street in Pacoima, LAPD Detective Frank Bishop said. Ryan
Lee, 25, of Lake View Terrace was arrested a few minutes later, less than a mile
away.
He was armed with the handgun believed to be used in the slaying, and he was
wearing a hooded sweat shirt that matched witnesses' description of the shooter,
Bishop said.
Edwards was not a gang member but had relatives and friends in the
neighborhood where he was shot, officials said.
"We don't know if there was an exchange before between these people," Bishop
said. "We have no idea what the motive was. We have no idea what he was doing in
the hours or moments before he was shot."
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Bishop at (818)
834-3115.
